Shrek’s self-appointed sidekick, Donkey is a fast-talking, bright-eyed motormouth who joins him on his epic adventure. Easily frightened and occasionally pushy, Donkey is bursting with optimism, charm, wit, and heart. Fiercely loyal and deeply caring, his huge personality and comic flair barely mask his strong desire for friendship and acceptance.

A pompous, power-hungry little villain with a raging Napoleon complex and an intense dislike of all fairytale creatures. Desperate to marry a princess so he can ascend the throne, he is a power-hungry dictator who has banished all the “freaks” from Duloc. Unfortunately, his dreams are undermined by the fact that he is hilariously small and neurotically temperamental. He hides the secret that he too is a “freak,” with one of the Seven Dwarves as his father. The comically short, ruthless ruler of Duloc is self-absorbed, lonely, and cruel.

A dragon that has been charged with guarding Princess Fiona in her isolated castle. She eventually falls in love with Donkey and attempts to keep him there forever. Imposing and flirtatious but tired of her job as the glorified baby-sitter.

Additional Information: Need Gospel Sound in voice, a la “Dreamgirls”. Must be able to move well. We might have more than one person playing the part of dragon but there will definitely be one person as the lead part singing the solos in the song.This actor may control/interact with some puppeteer/ moving costume elements

The leader of the fairytale creatures. He is an animated puppet whose nose grows every time he lies. Naive, eager to please, and a bit mischievous. He’s learning what it means to be honest and brave, often finding himself in over his head but always with good intentions. Plenty of sass with a penchant for lying,

A gingerbread man initially kidnapped by Lord Farquaad. His wit and resolution help him both avoid trouble and inspire the rest of the fairytale creatures. Although it’s a puppet -we are considering it being played by an actor.  Gingy is spunky, brave, and full of sass. Though small, he’s got a big personality and isn’t afraid to stand up for himself, especially when it comes to defending his friends

Young Fiona: Female, Age 9-13, Soprano with a strong belt, Vocal Range: B3 – C#5.+

A bright little girl only recently locked in a tower, who passes her time reading fairy tales about being rescued by a handsome and charming prince. She is innocent and optimistic.She sings with Teen  Fiona and Fiona in “I know it’s today”.  This actor will double as a citizen of Duloc.

Teen Fiona:  Female, Late Teen 14-18, Vocal Range: B3 – C#5.+

Now a teenager, Final has been trapped in the tower for years and has angst about not yet being rescued. She sings with Young Fiona and Fiona in “I know it’s today”  May double as a fairytale creature or other ensemble roles

The Blue bird is a vocal Solo Soprano with an extremely high range. The Blue bird played by a trick exploding puppet or if we can manage a trick on stage in person. Sings back and forth with Fiona in “Morning Person”. Singing higher and higher until Fiona’s high note causes the puppet to burst into a ball of exploding feathers. We could also accept an extremely accurate whistler for this role

The leader of Farquaad's armed forces and victim of many of Farquaad’s outbursts. The actor in this role has the unique opportunity to create their own character. We are looking for someone who can create a memorable performance of this role

Fairytale Creatures (Big Bad Wolf, Shoemaker's Elf, White Rabbit, Fairy Godmother, Peter Pan, Wicked Witch, Ugly Duckling, Mad Hatter, Humpty Dumpty, Elf, Dwarf and some other fairy tale characters form the Fairy tale ensemble.

 ‘Big’ but not ‘bad’ - Big Bad Wolf is a gruff and  masculine canine who just happens to be most comfortable in granny’s housecoat and mop-cap. A choice that sees him persecuted by Farquaad's soldiers. He hangs out with the other Fairy Tale Creatures.

The Three Little Pigs are from Germany.  Their lines are written in an accent. And they are MOST disturbed by Farquaad’s removal of all fairy tale characters from their homes to their swamp as they are used to comfort and finer things in life! These roles require comedic actors, who can create large fun characters and play off one another in songs and scenework.

The three bears always appear together and often riff off one another on stage. The actors must work together to create a fun believable  family dynamic to play with scenes and choreography. They are part of the Fairy tale ensemble.

The Three Blind MIce sing back up for Make a move. Presenting a sassy sixties vibe. The performers in these roles need to be able to sing in close harmony and must be strong movers. In addition to their featured song the three blind mice will also appear as part of the fairytale ensemble in other scenes.

The Pied Piper is featured in the song Morning Person as well as being part of the fairytale character scenes and numbers.The role requires a strong mover. It would be amazing to cast someone who can actually play the flute and pipe live on stage — but it’s definitely not essential!

Farquaad’s estranged father comes forward at the wedding to expose Farquaad’s troubled childhood as more fiction than fact. This role appears in all fairytale character scenes and songs along with the other 6 dwarves. Gruff is blunt and unimpressed.

The role is character-driven rather than vocally demanding. The Mad Hatter should be eccentric, quirky, and slightly chaotic, with bold physicality and strong reactions. It’s a great part for a confident performer who can commit to big, playful character choices and contribute strong energy to the ensemble..

The Ugly Duckling, is a sweet, sensitive, and slightly dramatic duck.

Confident, playful, and mischievous young boy with a youthful energy.  Appears when the fairytale creatures are banished to Shrek’s swamp. Joins the group in reacting to Farquaad’s rules and exile. Strong physicality — light, quick movement (can suggest flying or adventurous spirit)

This quirky, bemused and bespeckled comedic ensemble role is warm but dramatic, with a slightly over-the-top, theatrical flair. She first appears when the fairy tale creatures are banished to Shrek’s swamp and should show genuine vulnerability in these early moments.

Although not a lead role, the Fairy Godmother is a fun featured ensemble part that benefits from bold character choices.

He is often fidgety or hurried with expressive facial expressions

The dwarves are rounded up and banished to Shrek’s swamp. as part of the Fairytale ensemble.
